Ikira is the one who Jack looks to for support and guidance. He is wise, disciplined, and dedicated to Jack's quest. Our first glimpse of Ikira gave the image of a tattered, homeless, broken-down, perhaps even hung-over, old man living in the streets of Gagaal. But Jack saw through this screen and was rewarded with a loyal friend and expert martial artist.
Later in the season, Ikira's dark, secretive past was revealed. He used to be a Machina warrior, loyal to Machestro, but was betrayed by his fellow soldiers. They marooned him on a rock in the desert, sure that the rising sun would kill him. Ikira underwent a painful day in the scorching light, something that all Machina fear. But instead of dying, the sun burned away the toxins in his bloodstream, the very poisons that had made him (and his Machina brethren) so sensitive to light. He now crusades to help the ill soldiers return to the surface world but Machestro stands in his way, not willing to let go of his obedient subjects.
Ikira is very fond of reciting proverbs, most of which confuse the team more than enlighten them. Although the crew mates argue constantly, some of the most heated battles take place between Ikira and Mick. Mick feels that Ikira is a senile old man with no grasp on reality or the value of gold; Ikira feels that Mick is a disrespectful punk who lacks moral conviction and a sensible path in life. Both completely at odds with the thief, Anakonda and Ikira seem to have made a definite connection.
Although Ikira's honor and choices have been questioned in the past, he is a much valued member of the team: dependable, honest, and inteligent.
